Embodiment Construction

[0131] In general, the present invention relates to instruments for analyzing biological samples and reagent mixtures. The instrument is an all-in-one instrument capable of dispensing, amplifying and analyzing biological samples and reagents in a compact design. A strip containing a plurality of wells is automatically advanced through the instrument along a strip path assembly. The strip path assembly includes a first location, a second location, a third location, and a fourth location. In a first position, the strip may be cut such that a strip segment having a single array of wells is advanced through the instrument. Alternatively, the strip may be advanced through the first position to the second position without cutting. Furthermore, the strip can be advanced without cutting until any number of the array of recessed holes has passed the first position, and then the strip can be cut. In the second position, the biological sample and reagents are dispensed by the dispensi...

Abstract

An apparatus for processing biological samples includes a chassis. Connected to the chassis are: a strip path along which a strip having a matrix of wells may be automatically advanced through the instrument; a distribution assembly for dispensing the biological sample and reagents to the matrix of wells in the strip to form a biological sample and reagent mixture; a sealing assembly for sealing the biological sample and reagent mixture in the strip; and an amplification and detection assembly for detecting signals from the biological sample and reagent mixture in the matrix of wells in the strip.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to an instrument for analyzing biological samples, and more particularly to an all-in-one instrument capable of dispensing, amplifying and analyzing biological samples. [0002] The biological sample and reagent mixture can be subjected to amplification and analysis to detect the presence of the analyte in the mixture. Historically, biological samples and reagent mixtures have been amplified and analyzed for research applications including DNA sequencing, gene mapping, and DNA cloning, among others. Amplification and analysis of biological samples and reagent mixtures has become increasingly popular and is continuing to find innovative uses, including medical, infectious disease, and forensic applications. As the popularity of amplification and analysis of biological samples and reagent mixtures increases, more advanced equipment is required. [0003] Devices currently available for preparing, amplifying, and analyzin...
